[Silence] >> My name's Ken Rosenfield I'm a Dartmouth '77, and I'm currently an interventional cardiologist at Mass General Hospital where I direct the vascular medicine in the conventional section, and I'm also a leader both within the institution and also nationally within my specialty
Last summer when I was reading my Dartmouth Alumni e-mails, I came across an e-mail from Jim Kim which described this new program called the Master of Healthcare Delivery Science And I immediately got excited about the program It seemed incredibly visionary It's a chance for us to change the world of healthcare, which really needs to be fixed I thought Dr
Kim's vision about this was phenomenal, and I decided immediately to apply to the program I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the inaugural class, and the class has been everything I imagined and then some Every time I'm on campus, every time I'm online with my fellow students I'm more excited than the previous time The program has an opportunity to really make an impact It fills a niche, a need where there is a gap in our current healthcare knowledge base; that is, how should we deliver care? We know a lot about data and we know a lot about healthcare policy
We know a lot about the business of healthcare, but we don't know a lot about how to bring them all together to create the best healthcare delivery system And that was Jim Kim's vision, and I think it is the solution to, or holds the key to solving our healthcare problems in this country and internationally for that matter So I'm very excited to be a part of this program I feel like we are treading on new ground, creating new solutions to current problems As we create more solutions we find more problems, but that's okay
And we're going to solve those as well So I would encourage anybody to look at this program carefully It is going to change the world As a Dartmouth graduate, it's particularly gratifying for me to come back to campus and participate in a program that is so innovative and exciting, one that I think really will have a major impact nationally and internationally I know for my part that as a leader in the cardiology community it's already had an impact
I'm involved in organizing national programs, national educational programs for my specialty and we've already decided to integrate some of the value-based healthcare discussions, the appropriateness discussions in the conferences that I am actually running at the national level So I can tell you that already this program has had an impact, not just on me but will have an impact on my specialty, I hope So it's just the beginning of a long journey that we have to solve the healthcare problems that are facing our country There's no doubt in my mind that as a result of my and other peoples' involvement in this program, as a result of the program having been started with the vision of Jim Kim and others, Al Mulley, et cetera, that we will make a huge impact, Dartmouth will make a huge impact on the world
