Hey there it's Melissa with Melissaesplincom and calligraphy
org, I am sharing with you today a process video of a piece that I did recently and apologies this first little bit of video is kind of cropped funky so bear with me it does get better I promise Here I am using the Prima watercolor confection set in classics and tropical along with prima watercolor paper which I am surprisingly in love with It's fantastic, it blends really well it keeps everything nice and wet so I can do a lot of wet on wet techniques and then I'm also using a Princeton I believe we're a size 6 round brush all of the products that I'm using a link to in the description below and so if you want to check those out feel free to do that I'm really just kind of messing around here trying to keep things symmetrical but not too symmetrical because you know if you get too symmetrical then it gets kind of boring so kind of mimicking roses, poppies and I think it's hollyhocks the purple ones on the sides and then giving some different details in the leaves and foliage so some of the rounder leaves and then some of these fern like shapes to add a little bit more of texture a texture to it So that's kind of my main approach I'm pulling a fair amount of inspiration from artists Natalie Malan she and I do workshops together and man I love her work it's just so crisp and clean and colorful yet lots of different texture in each piece
So definitely check her out on Instagram if you are not following her already she's Natalie Malan studio and I don't know what other artists are inspiring me lately any etad oh my gosh her work is amazing The whole idea is to create this very lush floral arrangement surrounding some text that I'll be writing soon really just get myself into painting more My goal this year has really been to get back into painting I spent a lot of time doing private watercolour lessons when I was in high school and then I studied painting and drawing in college and then I just sort of I don't know it took a backseat for a long time so this is my goal to get back into watercolor and bring more of the fine art studio art depth texture painting back into my work whereas in the past it's really I've really been focused on the black and white of the calligraphy and the white page so I'm really trying to focus on just working on those techniques and skills to really push my art to a different place so yeah I this is the point here where I tend to overwork just a little bit I think I may have overworked this piece just a bit just added like too much stuff but I mean, it is what it is and I'm totally fine about it Now I'm adding the text and I'm using Sakura pigma professional fine brush and it's a brush marker that is small and a little bit stiffer than the Sakura and pigma brushes so it handles pretty well on the watercolor paper and it gives more of a pointed pen look without having to use pointed pen and I also really really love these markers because they're waterproof
So I can go back after I'm done every with all of this stuff and add more water color to it, which I shouldn't at this point, but it's nice to have the option to be able to go back add some more watercolor and not worry about smearing my work it's already done So this is a quote that's just been on my mind lately I want to do all of the things and I'm really struggling with not doing all of the things so you know there's just so many interests that I find I want to do all the time so my calligraphy style is largely influenced by copperplate calligraphy, and so that's kind of where I'm taking things and here I'm adding just a little bit more but that's basically it I'm done Thank you so much for watching and bearing with my rambling thoughts stay tuned for more videos and check out melissaesplincom for more tutorials and if you'd like to learn more about calligraphy and brush lettering check out calligraphy
